Ho Chi Minh University of Science: A female lecturer received the 2017 L’Oreal – UNESCO Fellowship
The National Selection Committee of L’Oréal – UNESCO for Women in Science in Vietnam has chosen 5 best woman scientists in the field of Life sciences and Material sciences in 2017.
On January 12th, L’Oréal – UNESCO for Women in Science National Fellowship which aims for woman development in science has presented the National Awards for Best Woman Scientists of 2017 and National Fellowships for 5 best woman scientists. One of the outstanding awardees is a female lecturer of University of Science, Vietnam National University - Ho Chi Minh City, Dr. Hoang Thi Dong Quy from Faculty of Science and Material Technology.
The eligibility criteria are based on the applicants’ scientific research achievement, expressed by the number of articles on international journals, scientific publications, past and on-going scientific research activities, the quality of being a role model for young researchers.
This program is eligible for all the woman scientists who are working and researching in Vietnam and have researched and contributed to the long-term development of sciences in Vietnam.
Two exceptional woman scientists who won the 50 million VND L’Oréal National Awards for Best Woman Scientists of 2017 are Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Hoai, Dean of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine under the Hue University of Medicine and Pharmacy, and Dr. Tran Thi Ngoc Dung, Head of the Department for Environmentally Friendly Technology of the Institute of Environment Technology under the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology.
Concurrently, three young female scientists received the 150 million VND L’Oréal National Fellowship for Women in Science to continue in their potential research, thus generating great impacts in Vietnam. They are Dr. Tran Phuong Thao from the Hanoi University of Pharmacy, Dr. Hoang Thi Dong Quy from the University of Science – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City, and Dr. Nguyen Thi Le Thu from the University of Technology – Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City.

Accordingly, Dr. Tran Phuong Thao was awarded for her research on the development of a novel inhibitor of Glutaminyl cyclase enzymee in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease.
Dr. Hoang Thi Dong Quy was honoured for her scientific research on Polymer Composite/Nanocomposite Fire Retardant on Polyurethane Styrofoam using environmentally friendly phosphorus/phosphorus-nitrogen.
Dr. Nguyen Thi Le Thu was chosen with her research on developing intelligent silicon "membrane" and "self healing" material for biomedical implant materials and self-healing membranes.
L’Oréal – UNESCO For Women in Science National Fellowship has been implemented in Vietnam ever since 2010. During the last 7 years, the program has honoured 24 potential young woman scientists in Vietnam for their significant contribution in their fields and encouraged them pursuing their passion in science.
